Okay everyone, I’m going to be honest…moving with children can be tough! On the bright side, with some planning and preparation, this difficult task can be made a little easier! First of all, it’s important to realize that moving is a process. With that being said, I think it’s best if we break it down into 3 stages; before, during and after the move.
1~ Before the move, be sure to communicate with your children so they know what to expect. Explain the process and allow them to ask questions. Include your children in moving preparations as much as possible. For example, allow them to help in packing their belongings and possibly even plan a reward for them lending a hand. Give them something to look forward to, such as allowing them to pick out decor for their new room. The goal is to create excitement and ease any fears they may have around this new adventure.
2~ During the move, it’s important to realize you are going to be preoccupied. Once again, advanced planning and preparation is a must. Keep a box of your child’s most prized possessions and toys separate from everything else being moved so they will have easy access to items that will help keep them busy while you and the movers stay on task. If possible, include them in the moving process. Assigning them simple tasks like dusting or bringing the movers water are great ways to allow them to have a sense of purpose during the move.
3~ Once you are all moved, the seemingly endless mountains of boxes can be overwhelming. Focus on tasks most important to making your family feel at home. I suggest setting up your beds right away so your family can not only have a place to rest and recover from the long day but this will also provide a sense of familiarity. In the days following, explore your new community together and help your children meet other kids in your new neighborhood. Most importantly, pace yourself and take a break. The boxes aren’t going anywhere and your little ones will be looking to you for help in getting settled into their new space.
~Welcome Home!~
