Prepping to Sell

Posted OnMay 07, 2019

Prepping to sell your home can seem a daunting thought, but is not necessarily so. By breaking down the steps into a smooth timeline, the preparations can happen over a course of time and not be overwhelming. When my husband and I sold our home last year, the first thing we focused on was curb appeal. We already kept a nice garden & the yard was landscaped well, so we put fresh paint on the home while maintaining cut grass and tidy flowerbeds. The second stage for us was clearing any items that we did not use on a day to day basis. Anything not used day to day was packed away in boxes, labeled, and stored neatly in the garage. This allowed us to declutter and simplify what was on display in our home while also starting the packing process. We used an assortment of boxes from grocery stores, friends, and larger Uhaul boxes as needed. We packed little by little each and every day over the course of about a month, starting with the things we used least, and gradually packing the more frequently used things as it got closer to closing time.
As interested buyers came to look at our home, we always made sure it was very clean and smelled fresh. The kitchen was spotless, carpets vacuumed, bathrooms cleaned, beds made, and no clutter on the dining table. We also have two dogs, so it was really important to stay on top of any type of pet smell.
We rented a Uhaul to move across town, and had family and friends help us with the loading process. Packing proactively helped the loading process move quickly, and when we unloaded at our new home, we used the Bellhops moving service to assist. They were fantastic, and I highly recommend using a moving service, whether it is full service or just people to help load and unload. Any amount of assistance when moving is a huge help!
All in all, taking the time to do things little by little on the outside and inside was a great way for us to stay organized and avoid becoming overwhelmed with selling our home.
